What we're up to
By now the count is twenty books, way less than originally planned. But we’re still here, alive and kicking … and we intend to stay.
Taking stock of our two years in business, here is the record: eleven published eBooks, with at least twelve more novels to come before January 2017 — including two original editions for the German speaking market.
In February — following a year of plotting, planning, and calculating — we decided to jump into business with our first program of eBooks.
The spraybooks concept:
We thought about all the fabulous novels published years, even decades ago that were commercially successful in their time but eventually went out of print; or, if less than successful, still quite worthy books.
Accordingly, we did some digging around in our shelves, and rooting through boxes filled with books. We discovered — surprise! — that good stories and good novels written by good authors remain so. The works are riveting and absorbing — and relevant beyond the boundaries of time.
WE’RE ONLY JUST BEGINNING!
From our years in the publishing industry — as editors, translators, and marketers — we know about good books and best business practices. From this experience, we’ve became friends with many authors — in Europe and throughout the world.
These friendships, along with a network of professional colleagues and the emergence of eBooks as a new production method, made it possible for us to launch a publishing venture of our own, and to do what we love: introduce the wonderful stories of our writer friends to new audiences.
So it all began for spraybooks.
Today we re-edit and re-publish stories and books we’ve known over the course of our personal careers — tales that we’ve loved to translate or edit or promote. And the more we worked with familiar material, the more we discovered new writers whose books had not yet been translated from their original languages. We are determined to publish more and more of this wealth of wonderful, yet overlooked material.
spraybooks is the brainchild of Juergen Buerger, a literary translator since 1984. Kathryn Bielfeldt, likewise a veteran translator, became his business partner. Soon, they were joined by Doris Engelke, a senior editor. Today, we are aided by more industry colleagues – you’ll meet them down at the bottom of this page – in our shared love of good narratives deserving of encores.
Currently, most of our books are works of crime fiction. This will remain our specialty, but will not limit our choice of genres — just think of the wonderful comic novels by Rolf Silber, the renowned German film director and screenwriter.
So, have a look around, and even though our ebooks are German only you’ll probably get an idea of what we are doing. Have fun and please tell German reading friends about us …
